Exploring Chablis and Burgundy: A Perfect Itinerary for Wine Lovers and Adventurers (Locals Guide 2025)

Burgundy is one of France's most renowned regions, known for its picturesque vineyards, charming towns, and rich history. Nestled within this region is Chablis, famous for its world-class wines and scenic landscapes. Whether you're a wine enthusiast, nature lover, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, Chablis offers something for everyone. Here’s a curated itinerary of things to do, taste, and explore in and around this beautiful region.

1. Wine Tasting in Chablis

Chablis is synonymous with exceptional white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. Visiting the local vineyards/wineries is a must.

In the heart of Chablis, you'll find countless wineries offering tastings of the region’s renowned Chablis wines. The best part? It’s incredibly convenient—you can simply stroll through town, visiting winery after winery at your own pace. For those looking to explore further, there are also many exceptional wineries just outside the city. A few of our favorites are:

Domaine Thierry Laffay (https://www.chablisthierrylaffay.com/)
Domaine Jean et Sébastien Dauvissat (https://jeanetsebastien-dauvissat.fr/)
Domaine William Fèvre (https://www.williamfevre.fr/)

Find out more about their opening hours, and other recommendations here: Wineries.

2. Cycle/Walk Through the Vineyards

For a more immersive experience, join a cycling tour through the Chablis countryside. Many companies offer bike rentals and guided tours that take you through scenic vineyard routes, allowing you to stop at local estates for tastings and picture-perfect views.

You can also take plenty of beautiful walks from Maisons Vaudésir to enjoy the vineyards, hills and views of Chablis.

3. Stroll Through the Town

The town of Chablis itself is small but full of character and very pretty. To discover the historic center of Chablis, the easiest way is to follow the route marked on the ground - a diamond with a bunch of grapes. This will allow you to pass by the main monuments of the city.

The entrance to the city center of Chablis is marked by two towers. Those of Porte Noël, which was built on the remains of the old fortification which surrounded the city. The current towers date from the 18th century.

Stroll the narrow streets, discovering the Saint-Martin collegiate church, and the Obédiencerie, a historic monastery that once housed monks who produced wine and is a wine estate and today belongs to Domaine Laroche. You can also do a wine tasting there.

4. Picnic at a vineyard viewpoint

Prepare a gourmet basket from the local merchants (buy cheese, bread, gougères and wine) and enjoy a peaceful picnic with a view of the vineyards. There are several viewpoints over Chablis and the Chablis vineyards, perfect for a relaxing afternoon, offering a serene setting among the vineyards and hills.
Stop at the local Chablis market (Sundays) to buy artisanal products or at one of the many bakeries in the city center.

5. Day Trip to Auxerre

Just a 20-minute drive from Chablis is Auxerre, a town rich in history and culture. Visit the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, with its striking Gothic architecture, and take a walk along the Yonne River. The medieval streets lined with half-timbered houses add to its charm.

6. Explore Noyers-sur-Serein

One of the most beautiful villages in France, Noyers-sur-Serein, is less than 30 minutes from Chablis. With its medieval streets, quaint shops, and beautiful squares, it's a lovely spot for a leisurely afternoon. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

The old city wall and six historic gates are still partially intact, preserving the town's medieval charm. Just beyond the picturesque center, you’ll find the ruins of the ancient castle that once stood here. You can wander through the remnants of its past, browse handmade crafts in Noyers' quaint shops, visit the unique knife museum, and enjoy a meal at one of the town’s charming restaurants.

7. Visit the Vineyards of Irancy

A short drive (or cycle!) from Chablis brings you to Irancy, another wine-producing town famous for its red wines made from Pinot Noir. Explore the vineyards, and don’t forget to stop at the local cellars for tastings. The surrounding landscape, dotted with cherry trees, is breathtaking in the spring.

8. Visit Tonnerre

Located just 20 minutes from Chablis, Tonnerre is a charming town full of history. Highlights include the Fosse Dionne, a mysterious natural spring with striking turquoise water, and the Hôtel-Dieu de Tonnerre, a medieval hospital founded in 1293. It’s a hidden gem well worth exploring.

9. Vézelay and its Iconic Basilica

Another must-see, Vézelay (https://www.vezelaytourisme.com/), is a hilltop town famous for the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene, one of the starting points of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The views from the top of the hill are extraordinary, and the town itself is picturesque and full of history.

10. Visit the Cité des Vins de Chablis

For a deep dive into the world of Chablis wines, a visit to the Cité des Vins de Chablis (https://www.cite-vins-bourgogne.fr/) is a must. Recently opened, this modern wine tourism center offers interactive exhibits that take you through the history, terroir, and winemaking processes of Burgundy's famed wines. You can also participate in guided tastings to better understand the nuances of the Chablis appellations. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned wine enthusiast, the Cité des Vins is a perfect spot to start your wine journey in Chablis.

11. Savor Local Cuisine in Chablis

After a day of exploring, indulge in the local cuisine at one of Chablis' top restaurants.
Au Fil du Zinc (https://www.aufilduzinc.com/) offers a refined dining experience with locally sourced ingredients, while Hostellerie des Clos is perfect for a gourmet meal paired with a glass of Chablis wine.
